টেস্ট ক্রিকেট খেলা খেলোয়াড় কিংবা একটি দলের খেলার ক্ষমতা কতখানি তা টেস্ট খেলার মাধ্যেমে বিবেচনা করা বা প্রস্তুত করা হয় । তাছাড়াও টেস্ট ক্রিকেট খেলা পূর্বে ৬-দিনব্যাপী অনুষ্ঠিত হতো। পরবর্তীতে তা পাঁচদিনে নিয়ে আসা হয় ও মাঝখানে একদিন বিশ্রাম রাখা হয়। বর্তমানে বিশ্রাম রাখা হয় না । প্রথম আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে টেস্ট ম্যাচটি অনুষ্ঠিত হয় ১৮৭৭ সালের ১৫ মার্চ । এ খেলায় প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা করে অস্ট্রেলিয়া ও ইংল্যান্ড ।

টেস্ট খেলার নিয়ম

টেস্ট ক্রিকেট খেলা প্রতিদিন ৯০ ওভার করে খেলা হয় । টেস্ট আন্তরজাতিক ম্যাচগুলো ৫ দিনব্যপী খেলা হয় । ৫ দিনে কমপক্ষে ৪৫০ ওভারের খেলা হবে । আবার কোন কারণ বসত এক দিনে ৯০ ওভারের কম খেলা হলে, তা পরের দিন খেলা শুরু হওয়ার আগে তা পূরণ করা হয়ে থাকে ।
প্রথমে কে ব্যাটিং করবে তা টসের মাধ্যে নির্ধারন করা হয় । টেস্ট খেলায় যে দুই দলের মধ্যে যার বেশি রান থাকবে, তাকে জয়ী হিসাবে ঘোষনা করা হবে । যেমন ধরুন, বাংলাদেশ ও ইন্ডিয়া ।
প্রথমে বাংলাদেশ খেলে ১২০ রান করল, এবং আলআউট ( প্রথম ইনিংস ) । এরপর ইন্ডিয়া ব্যাটিং করে ১৩০ রান করল এবং আলআউট (প্রথম ইনিংস) । এখানে ইন্ডিয়া অতিরিক্ত ১০ রান করাকে লিড নেওয়া বলে থাকে । আবার  ১২০ এর থেকে কম করাকে পিছিয়ে থাকা বলে ও সমান ১২০ স্কোর করলে বলে। ইন্ডিয়া যদি a এর চাইতে ২০ রান কম করত তাহলে বাংলাদেশ এবং ইন্ডিয়াকে আবার ব্যাটিং করার জন্য পাঠাতে পারে । এরপর ইনিংসে বাংলাদেশ আবার ব্যাটিং করে রান করল ২০০ এবং আলআউট (দ্বিতীয় ইনিংস) । তাহলে ইন্ডিয়ার আগের ইনিংসের ১০ রান এর লিড বাদ দিয়ে এখন রানের টার্গেট হবে, ১৯০ রান । এবার বাংলাদেশ যদি ইন্ডিয়াকে ১৯০ রান করতে না দেয় এবং ১৯০ রানের আগের যদি ইন্ডিয়ার সব আউট হয়ে যায় । তাহলে বাংলাদেশ দল জিতে যাবে । আবার ইন্ডিয়া যদি ১০ উইকেট আউট হওয়ার আগে এবং ৫ দিন শেষ হওয়ার আগে ১৯০  করতে সক্ষম হয়, তাহলে ইন্ডিয়া জিতে যাবে । এরপর বাংলাদেশ দল যদি শেষ দিনেও ইন্ডিয়াকে ১৯০ রান করতে দিলো না তাহলে খেলা ড্র হবে ।
